AFC Energy, a pioneer in hydrogen power generation, approached Amcanu with a challenging project: designing and building an enclosure for their latest ‘H-Power Generator - S Series’. This modular and scalable hydrogen fuel cell generator is at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions. The goal was to create an enclosure that would not only house this advanced technology but also ensure optimal functionality and safety, whilst being instantly recognisable in the field as a generator.
Hydrogen fuel cells are a cutting-edge technology, and designing an enclosure for such a system presented unique challenges. Even though Amcanu has nearly 50 years of experience in designing and building industrial enclosures, hydrogen fuel cell technology was an entirely new application. This project required extensive simulations, calculations, and testing to address the many unknowns and ensure the final design would meet the highest standards.
AFC Energy wanted a modular design for their enclosure, with the ability to scale the unit by adding or removing ‘blades' – modular fuel cell units sandwiched between two end sections. This design would allow for easy maintenance and replacement, as well as scalability of the generator's power output. Effective airflow management was critical to enable the generator to run at optimal performance. And, despite being a relatively new technology, AFC Energy wanted the enclosure to have a familiar appearance on site – similar to traditional diesel generators. This would help in the adoption and acceptance of hydrogen power generation among customers and end users.
Amcanu’s technical design engineers collaborated closely with AFC Energy’s team to develop an innovative enclosure solution. The final design features a modular structure with removable 'blades' or fuel cell modules that can be easily accessed for maintenance or replacement. The number of blades determines the size of the base and canopy roof, allowing for scalable configurations while maintaining structural integrity and safety.

The enclosure was powder-coated in AFC Energy white – creating a cohesive look that fits seamlessly into their product range. The familiar generator-like appearance helps position the H-Power Generator as a recognisable and reliable power solution on site.
