We want to support the engineers of the future – particularly in our own community – so we are working with our local secondary school to provide a bursary fund to facilitate some of their STEM activities.
Glan-y-Môr school are doing everything they can to build on their tremendous STEM achievements earlier in the year. Back in April, they beat off strong competition from across the UK to win the Young Engineers School of the Year. Just recently, they have become one of six schools in the UK to be awarded gold status by TeenTech as a centre of innovation and creativity in recognition for their work in developing careers in science and technology.
The bursary will help the school pay for attendance to STEM events and competitions. Alongside this we will be offering work experience opportunities, where a young person can come into our working environment to develop technical skills. At the moment we are working with Shaughn Poulter aged 15, who has a keen interest in engineering and is already involved in several STEM projects.
We’ve set Shaughn a challenge to design a new product brochure stand, which he’s working on with Chris Rowlands from our technical team.
There has been a decline in the number of students taking engineering ‘gateway’ subjects at A-level, so it is very important to make sure we nurture young people demonstrating a natural interest in STEM subjects. Bringing young people onto the shop floor and getting them living and breathing engineering is the perfect way to inspire the next generation.
The school really are achieving great things – it’s not just the students who are award-winning – Susan Quirk, one of the teachers has also just scooped the STEM learning UK Leadership Award! Congratulations to you all.
